Fake BT Scam
One of our customers were scammed by a caller claiming to be from BT. As is usually the case, the customer was already having issues with BT and expecting a call from them, which made the scammer all the more convincing. Needless to say, they managed to get access to the customer’s laptop and through a long-winded process, ended up convincing them to send money to the scammers bank.
Once the customer realised their mistake, they contacted the bank who advised them to have the computer checked over and cleaned out. We scanned the laptop and found a keylogger and some other malware which was all removed along with the Any Desk remote access software that was still on the computer.
The scammers created a fake BT website using www.webnode.co.uk to show the customer. Once connected to the customer’s system, they downloaded and ran Malwarebytes to show them that their system was clean and safe to use, before installing their hacking tools and malware.
